The basics

What is DisDubs?

A group dubbing game that runs inside Discord. Pick a scene, hand out the characters, perform it over voice chat while the script scrolls, and get the clip back with your voices on it. The walkthrough covers a session end to end.

Is it free?

Yes. Playing is free, including the built-in catalogue. A server gets three free upload slots for its own dub packs. Extra slots, and a Studio subscription that raises the scene length limit and keeps finished dubs longer, are optional. Nothing gated behind them stops you playing.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a Discord Activity, so it opens inside the Discord client you already have. One person with permission adds the bot to the server once; after that everyone joins the voice channel and opens it from the activity tray.

Does it work on my phone? On a Mac?

Yes to both, and to Windows, Linux and the Discord web client. The recording happens on the voice call rather than inside the app, which is why every platform behaves the same rather than one of them being the “real” one.

How many people do I need?

Two is plenty for most scenes, and one person can hold several parts, so it works alone as well. There is no player cap to run into. The limits are the voice channel and the number of characters in the scene.

Recording and privacy

Does it record everyone in the voice channel?

No. During a take, the bot listens to everyone for the level meter, but it records only people who are performing. Everyone else’s audio is measured and discarded immediately; it is never written to disk or used in the dub. The bot is visible in the channel while it listens, so tell everyone before you roll.

Why does a bot do the recording?

Because a Discord Activity cannot reach a microphone. The sandbox it runs in refuses, on every desktop platform, and that is not something an app can ask nicely about. So a bot joins the voice channel instead and captures each performer on their own separate track.

It turned out to be the better design anyway: nobody installs anything or grants a permission, it is identical on mobile, and isolated tracks mean one person laughing does not ruin somebody else’s line.

How long do you keep my recordings?

Raw takes are deleted about two hours after the session ends. Finished dubs are deleted after six hours, or thirty days on a Studio Pro server. A dub somebody has reported is kept until the report is dealt with, because a moderation record that has expired is no record. This is enforced by a timer inside the server, not by a promise. The privacy policy has the whole picture.

What data do you have on me?

Your Discord user ID, display name and avatar. No email, no analytics, no advertising, no trackers, and nothing sold or shared. Email admin@gridiron-duels.com and your recordings get deleted on request.

Can I stop the bot deafening people?

Yes. Server-deafening is only used by solo booth, which exists so that people recording at their own pace hear the scene instead of five friends performing different lines at once. It is undone when the session ends, and you can turn it off.

Scenes and packs

Can I use The Choicer Voicer dub packs?

Yes. DisDubs reads that format, and DubForge’s. Upload the pack as a zip from inside Discord and it appears in your server’s scene picker. The OGV video is transcoded on import, because no browser plays Theora any more. The dub pack guide has the details.

Who can see the packs my server uploads?

Only your server, unless you ask for a scene to be published. Uploads are private by default because that is how people actually use them.

How long can a scene be?

Three minutes on a free server, ten with Studio, twenty with Studio Pro. The pack file itself can be up to 2 GB and uploads in chunks, so a dropped connection costs one slice rather than the whole upload.

Do I need the rights to the video?

You are responsible for what you upload, and most dub packs are cut from films and television. The terms say where that leaves everyone, and the copyright policy is the takedown route, which a real person reads.

The Choicer Voicer

Is DisDubs affiliated with The Choicer Voicer?

No. It is not made by YeahMaybe, not endorsed by them, and not a mod of their game. It reads the same pack format because that format is what the community already has, and the game is worth the $5 on its own.

Does The Choicer Voicer have online multiplayer?

Not officially. Its multiplayer is local: up to four players on one computer. The multiplayer page covers what people do instead, including the community mods.

Do I still need to buy the game?

Not for DisDubs. Buy it because it is good, not because something here requires it.

When it goes wrong

The bot did not join.

Check it can see and join that specific voice channel. A per-channel permission override beats the server-wide one, and that is nearly always the cause.

Somebody’s line came back silent.

They were muted, not in the voice channel, or joined after the take started. The level meter shows who is actually being heard before the tape rolls, which is the check worth doing.

A line sits slightly behind the picture.

Drag it. Every device has its own audio latency, and the take is nudgeable against the original waveform without re-recording anything.

Something is broken, or somebody behaved badly.

There is a report button on scenes and on finished dubs, open to everyone in the room rather than just the host, because sometimes the host is the reason. For anything else, email us.
